Original description as Perca undulata:

Linnaeus, Carolus. 1766. "12th edition". Systema naturae sive regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis. Laurentii Salvii, Holmiae. 1:1-532 (ffm00481)

Bodianus costatus Mitchill, 1815, with type locality at New York, U.S.A. Determiner: Chao, 1978
Micropogon lineatus Cuvier, 1830, with type locality at Havana, Cuba. Determiner: Smith, 1986
