The poecilid Heterophallus echeagarayi (Álvarez, 1952) was reported in the watershed of Tonalá and Grijalva-Usumacinta (Mexico). However, the current limit of its distribution could be due to the absence of specific samples of species small in size in neighboring basins with habitats and similar environmental conditions. Our goal was to check its distribution by taking numerous samples in the same basin as well as in adjacent basins. The results showed an increase in reporting in the basin of Grijalva-Usumacinta, and in particular in the Palizada river, as well as the extension of its geographical distribution towards the basins Chumpan, Candelaria and Mamantel. The first reports of H. echeagarayi in these three basins allowed an update of the geographical distribution area of ​​this species in the plain coast of the southern Gulf of Mexico "
