Conservation: Xiphophorus couchianus est évalué par l'Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature dans la Liste Rouge des espèces menacées comme étant (EW) éteint à l'état sauvage (2018). The species was lost by habitat loss and degradation caused by urban encroachment, sewage pollution, desiccation of the natural springs and competition and predation from introduced invasive alien species (Ceballos et al., 2016). Ojo de Agua de Apodaca has been transformed into an urban recreational pool and the remaining population there has been lost.
